Estimating Work

Do you all have any good recommendations on places to learn how much certain kinds of remodeling will cost? Without getting actual quotes?

When my hubby and I look at houses I often know what I would want done to the property if we were to buy it, but I have no idea how intensive and/or expensive the work would be. For instance, several houses have decks that are looking pretty rough. We know it would need to be fixed and can roughly gauge redo from resanded and weather proofed. But how much either of those would cost? No idea.

Would you be hiring someone to do the work? If so.. I can see asking the contractor you'd be hiring to go with you to check out the places with you, or at least the houses on your short list. We've got a good relationship with our contractor and I can see him being willing to do that. Especially since he knows we'd use him for the work.

Anything beyond basic fixes, we would probably hire someone, but we don't know anyone. I don't know if a contractor would be willing to do that for a potential client that they've never worked with.

We used servicemagic.com to find our guy and he's amazing. I'm sure you could always call and ask contractors in your area. Worst case is they'll say no, right? :)

True. I guess we will have to wait until we have a short list of houses though. Ideally we would already have this information and could use that determination to know which houses to short list. *shrugs*

Thank you for the site recommendation! I always get nervous hiring people. I'm always afraid they are going to be untrustworthy or unreliable. : /

Who knows, with the economy the way it is you might find someone who is willing to go to all the places you look at for just a small fee or something. :)

The nice thing about servicemagic is that they insure everyone is licensed and bonded and vetted. So I've felt pretty safe about using it since I have no one local I can ask for recommendations. So far we've found our cleaning service and contractor through the site and our contractor is amazing. I think we interviewed 3-4 when we were looking and this was the guy we felt best about :)
